And He [Jesus] looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. Luke 21:1-2

We were reading the other morning and this poor widow caught my attention just like she had Jesus’.  This is what stands out to me about her character:

  • She gave despite her need

  • She was faithful and showed up despite the ridicule

  • She believed God saw her and was taking care of her (YES, He did!)

  • She was obedient to God’s written Word

  • She didn’t allow fear to dictate her actions

So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.” Luke 21:3

She invested all she had in the place where God was, and He showed up. This widow was approaching God through familiar religious channels and giving her all. Jesus was there to show the world that He saw her faith. She was never invisible to God. Her physical gift that was despised by man was received by God in the Heavenlies.

Did God receive two mites from her?  No, the temple did. God received a widow’s trust in His character. She had no other resource to ensure her survival than His deliverance and provision. Her eternal investment was trust in God’s unfailing lovingkindness.

That, my Friends, is the highest form of Worship. You are worshipping the character of God with your trust.

There was another who approached Jesus with her all, a prostitute with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume.  She broke it and anointed Jesus, washing His dusty feet with her hair and tears. (Luke 7:38)

She, too, didn’t pay heed to the snickers and groans from the observers.  She only had eyes for Jesus. She did the thing that God had moved in her heart to do which seemed so very odd to man yet was essential for the anointing preparation for His death.

With spiritual eyes, we would have seen the angels drop to their knees in such a holy moment.

What is God asking you to do?
What is He asking you to give?
What hinders you?
